Driver Esapekka Lappi is the second signing of Citröen for the 2019 World Rally Championship season. The Finn will be Sébastien Ogier’s partner, who has been recentrly announced by the French manufacturer, and it is going for a long-term paln, in pursuit of success.
Lappi debuted in 2017 in the Toyota Yaris, at Rally Portugal, where he left a good impression. Some rallies later, at home, Finland, he astonished everyone with his first victory at the main category. Jari-Matti Latvala dropped out during that round beacuse of mechanical issues while being the leader, but Lappi was the only one who could keep pace with him and finally seized his chance.
Now, he has decided to take a new step in his sports carreer. After learning from, as himself says, two great drivers such as Jari-Matti Latvala and Ott Tänak, Lappi wants to be next to Sébastien Ogier and benefit from his advice, aiming for the continuity of his learning process.
“We were keen to sign up two very competitive crews for next year and the arrival of Esapekka is therefore excellent news. Putting faith in young drivers has long been hard-wired in the DNA of our brand and Esapekka certainly has the ideal profile,” assured Pierre Budar, Citröen Racing Director.
“It’s a good opportunity for me to keep improving. After having learned many things from Jari-Matti Latvala last year and from Ott Tänak this year, I’ll have everything it takes to be even better if I also manage to draw inspiration from Seb,” said Lappi.
We’ll be able to see all of these stars in their new squads, racing on Chilean land, in May 2019, expecting to experience a real international motorsport feast.
See you on the road!
